RESET! Beasts and Demons

Cie Gilles Jobin / 2024

Overview

RESET! Beasts and Demons is a hybrid choreographic creation where real bodies and virtual bodies coexist on stage.

A motion-capture system installed on the stage captures the dancers’ movements live. The data is transformed into real-time visuals—avatars, and virtual allegories projected onto stage screens.

The piece plays with the “gap” between realities: what you see in front of you, what you see on screens, and what your brain tries to reconcile.

What I did

On this production, my role focused on the real-time pipeline and stage operation:

  • Built and maintained the Unity real-time environment used for the live projections
  • Implemented mocap data ingestion and mapping to avatars
  • Worked on scene logic, states, cues, and reliable transitions for live performance
  • Optimized the Open World Scene for performance stability
  • Optimized for touring reliability
  • Digital stage management during performances (running the real-time system live)

Technical notes

  • Live mocap data drives rigs / forms in Unity
  • Real-time rendering output is integrated into the stage projection workflow
  • The system is designed to remain stable under live conditions (fixed framerate targets, predictable state machine behavior, quick reset paths)
